So far i have only used the rectangular grid tool but its pretty basic in its functioning and can t do gutters nor do i know how to add adjustable margins.

Find the columns window and enter the number of columns you want to add.
You can set the gutter size from the new document menu when creating a new indesign project.
Start with a low value such as 1 pica.
Go to the new document menu.
